While walking might require some physical effort, the scenic streetscapes you encounter are a rewarding payoff for your exertions.
San Francisco | Transportation
In San Francisco, transportation is a crucial consideration. The city boasts a convenient public transit system, including the BART subway and numerous bus routes. For tourists, especially those whose primary focus is sightseeing, purchasing a tour bus ticket can be a smart choice. Tour buses offer guided services and shuttle between major attractions, making them extremely convenient. For instance, the hop-on hop-off tour buses by Big Bus are an excellent option.
However, if you plan to drive around San Francisco, be aware that as a city with a long history, many streets are relatively narrow and traffic can be busy, especially on weekends when downtown traffic is often congested. Therefore, when planning your route, it's important to consider potential traffic delays.

When it comes to choosing accommodation, San Francisco offers a wide range of options. Generally, staying near Union Square or Fisherman’s Wharf is most convenient. Union Square, in particular, is a popular choice for many visitors due to its proximity to a BART station, offering direct access to SFO Airport, and its connection to multiple Muni lines. Of course, the ideal place to stay should be determined based on the attractions you plan to visit, in order to minimize time spent on transportation.

San Francisco | Downtown Attractions
San Francisco's city center is surrounded by stunning waterfront views, and this highly developed city boasts countless enchanting attractions. Looking at the map, these attractions can be roughly divided into three main areas: the northeast corner, the northwest corner, and the more inland Mission District. The northeast corner is home to well-known locations like Fisherman's Wharf, the Ferry Building, and Embarcadero, while a bit further inland, you'll find the vibrant Chinatown and the towering Financial District. The northwest corner centers around the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge, with beautiful coastal landscapes such as Presidio, Land's End, and Ocean Beach, as well as the vast Golden Gate Park. The Mission District and The Castro, located in the city center, offer an excellent opportunity to experience San Francisco's rich multiculturalism, along with landmarks like City Hall, various museums, and the city's high point, Twin Peaks.
If it's your first visit to San Francisco, it's recommended to allocate at least three days to explore the city's most popular attractions. For those with limited time, consider joining a day tour. This way, you can efficiently cover the main sights and save a lot of commuting time between them.

Ferry Building, located in the heart of San Francisco, is a historic building that blends classical charm with modern style. One of its iconic features is the grand clock tower and prominent clock, which used to be one of the busiest piers in the San Francisco waterfront. Today, the Ferry Building has transformed into a hub of food and culture, featuring an indoor marketplace and weekend outdoor markets offering a wide variety of local cuisine, including fresh seafood, rich coffee, and exquisite pastries. From here, you can take ferries to famous attractions such as Alcatraz Island and Angel Island. If you're interested in taking a boat tour, it's recommended to purchase tickets in advance, as on-site tickets may often be sold out.
Inside the Ferry Building, we had a particular fondness for Blue Bottle Coffee, known for its unique and unforgettable flavors. I remember our first visit when we ordered a New Orleans-style iced coffee, and its rich, aromatic taste still lingers in our memories. We also tried an affogato, a simple combination of coffee and ice cream that turned out surprisingly delicious. However, what truly surprised us were their waffles. Unlike typical waffles, these had a unique aroma, reminiscent of buttery pound cake. Even for someone like me who isn't a big fan of waffles, I couldn't help but appreciate them.
During the weekends, the outdoor space outside the Ferry Building hosts a farmer's market that's not only lively but also offers a wide variety of delicious foods. We highly recommend trying the pork sandwich from Roli Roti, a vendor known for its tasty and reasonably priced offerings. Their pork sandwich features juicy meat with a crispy, flavorful outer layer, reminiscent of Western-style roast meats. Each bite is a delightful experience that will leave you wanting more. While exploring the market, you can enjoy a satisfying culinary adventure.
In addition to the pork sandwich, you can also savor locally produced Fort Point beer at the Ferry Building's market. Also, don't miss out on Acme Bread, a brand renowned in the San Francisco Bay Area, with many famous sandwich shops emphasizing the use of Acme Bread for their sandwiches. These culinary delights not only represent the local flavors of San Francisco but are also an essential part of your travel experience in this city. Each dish carries the essence of the local culture, allowing your taste buds to embark on a delightful exploration during your journey.
For travelers who enjoy shopping, the Embarcadero Center across from the Ferry Building is a great choice. These sea lions typically enjoy sunbathing on the shore or frolicking in a playful manner, adding a lot of liveliness and entertainment to the waterfront area. It's not only an excellent spot to observe sea lions but also a great opportunity to experience the unique charm of San Francisco's harbor.

Ghirardelli Square, located not far west from Fisherman's Wharf, is a charming square named after the famous chocolate brand Ghirardelli. The history of this brand dates back to 1852 when its founder, Domingo Ghirardelli, immigrated to California from Peru and started his chocolate manufacturing business. Initially, Ghirardelli's factory was established at an old wool mill site, but in 1882, it was moved to this location, where a modern chocolate factory was built. However, by the 1960s, with the decline of commerce in the Fisherman's Wharf area, Ghirardelli Square also fell into a decline. In 1964, to preserve this historic landmark, William Roth purchased the square, preserving its historic buildings and landscape, and transforming it into a commercial center that combined food and shopping. Since then, Ghirardelli Square has not only become a famous landmark but also a popular tourist destination.
