German Culinary Journey (Part 2): Dresden and Rothenburg

Dresden Cuisine

Paulaner's

I had two good meals in Dresden. The first one is this Paulaner's, right behind the Dresden Palace. It was afternoon and not too crowded, but the food was still great and the waiters were very kind and patient in answering our questions about the menu. It was a beautiful day, so we chose to sit outside. The first course was soup, a traditional German liver meatball soup, which I thought was great, served with some bread.

We'll start with two beers.

Since I'm already a bit tired of eating pig's feet, I switched to roast pork (Schweinerbraten), which is more convenient because you don't have to remove the bones.

This is a baked lamb dish that I ordered on a whim. It's not really a German dish, but it's good nonetheless.

Augustiner

Augustiner is located next to Our Lady's Church. This meal is for dinner, because the meal is located in the square, it is very busy, and if the time is right, there are live music performances. This is a relatively modest meal, starting with a bowl of German soup, in which German sausage is still missing.

For the main course, we had grilled chicken with a red wine sauce, which had a crispy skin and went well with the beer.

Gastronomy in Rothenburg

Hotel-Gasthof Goldener Greifen

Rothenburg is basically a tourist town. It was already afternoon when we arrived, and the restaurant we were supposed to go to was already closed, so we picked this restaurant in Hotel-Gasthof Goldener Greifen, near the town hall square. The restaurant is medium sized, but it's much more simple compared to the previous restaurants.

Drinks were ordered in white wine and beer.

For the main course, I ordered a simple German sausage and a pork chop. For the side dishes, I had French fries and baked potatoes. In Germany, no matter how you choose a side dish, it seems to be the same as a potato. The flavor was medium.

Rothenburger Schneeballen

After lunch, although I was still very full, I had to try the authentic Rothenburger Schneeballen, called Rothenburger Schneeballen in Chinese, since I was in Rothenburg. It looks dreamy on the outside, but this is the original flavor, which is simply powdered sugar sprinkled on the batter, and tastes a bit like shakima. There are other flavors such as chocolate, strawberry and so on, which look like colorful snowballs.
