American Culture Explored: A Day with the Oakland Athletics in MLB - It's All About the Post-Game!

Intro

This trip was a little different than usual, as I went to see the MLB Oakland A's game. Baseball is a sport with deep historical roots and cultural significance in the United States, and is part of American culture. Watching a game is actually one of the most common leisure activities in American families. Fans usually grow up watching games with their families, which is passed down from generation to generation and is also a social activity. The reason why I came to watch this game was because I was participating in a company event. In fact, this game will take place in 2021, and I thought of this experience because Oakland A's announced a while ago that it will move to Las Vegas, Nevada, and I don't have the chance to try the experience of watching a game in Oakland after the move, so I'm going to record it here.

MLB | Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics, commonly known as the Oakland A's, are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Oakland, California, as of 2023. They play their home games at the RingCentral Coliseum. This team has a rich history, originally founded in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics. Later, they moved to Kansas City from 1955 to 1967 and eventually settled in Oakland in 1968. They have won nine World Series championships and fifteen American League championships. However, perhaps the most notable achievement is the remarkable story depicted in the movie "Moneyball," where Billy Beane used data analysis to set a record with 20 consecutive wins in the 2002 season.

The Game Day Experience

The Oakland Athletics' home field is the RingCentral Coliseum. Due to traffic, we arrived after the game had already started. However, many fans who attend live games are season ticket holders. Watching baseball games is actually a common leisure activity for American families. Based on our previous experience attending other MLB games, arriving late is quite normal, and there are still many fans entering the stadium gradually.

After parking the car, we queued up to enter the stadium. The Oakland Athletics are actually relatively less popular compared to the Giants in the Bay Area. This game was a match between the Athletics and the Red Sox, and during the pandemic, there were even fewer people in attendance. This game was a regular season game and served as a casual social event. The fans who came to watch the game were also very laid-back.

Our seats were in a box on the upper level, and the view was excellent. It's a great venue for events, and the stadium provides food and drinks, allowing everyone to eat, chat, and watch the game simultaneously. Another advantage of the Oakland A's is that season ticket holders can purchase food at half price near the field. The combo of a hot dog and beer is only $7, which is quite a budget-friendly price in the expensive Oakland and Bay Area. Friends who come to watch games regularly say that most fans probably come more for the post-game activities than the game itself.

After the game ended, everyone began to move onto the field. That's when we realized that one of the major features of Oakland A's games is that they have fireworks or drone shows after every game. As the game's end time approaches, more and more people arrive because they can go out onto the outfield and lie on the premium grass used for games to watch the fireworks. The fireworks start about half an hour after the game ends, so almost everyone comes prepared with picnic blankets and snacks.

When the fireworks began, everyone just lay down and enjoyed the show. Every time I watch fireworks, it's always a joyful experience. The fireworks not only light up the night sky but also illuminate the hearts of the spectators. All worries seem to disappear at that moment. It's a fantastic and down-to-earth entertainment experience.
