Maui Accommodations
Maui is the second-largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago and a world-renowned super tourist hotspot. Consequently, accommodation on Maui is often very expensive, especially during peak tourist seasons, making it a significant challenge for budget travelers to find affordable lodging. However, there are still some options on Maui suitable for backpackers and budget-conscious travelers. During this trip to Maui, we decided to be budget-conscious backpackers and put considerable effort into finding relatively cheap yet comfortable accommodation. This article will share two accommodations—Howzit Hostel and Camp Olowalu, both of which are relatively low-budget options.
Howzit Hostel
- Room: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Facility: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Location: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Price: $$
- Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Howzit Hostel, located in the Wailuku area, is a backpacker hostel that also offers private rooms. After staying there, we found the beds to be reasonably comfortable, and the facilities, including free Wi-Fi, a shared kitchen, and a lounge area, were satisfactory. The location is excellent, close to the town center of Wailuku and near the Iao Valley State Monument, with many local restaurants and shops that are relatively cheaper than other places. If you are interested in social activities at a backpacker hostel, they have many events for interacting and mingling with other backpackers. The downside is the limited parking space, which might require parking on nearby streets.

Olawalu Camp
- Facility: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Location: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Price: $$
- Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Camp Olowalu is a private campsite located on the west coast of Maui, about a 10-minute drive from Lahaina. Following the wildfires over the past two years, there are currently fewer affordable accommodation options on the west coast, so we decided to camp here. However, Camp Olowalu also offers glamping options that do not require bringing your own equipment, with tents, cabins, and parking spots available. The facilities are quite comfortable. The campsite has automated gate controls, making it feel very safe, and staying here allows you to enjoy the beautiful beach and mountain scenery, perfect for travelers looking to leisurely enjoy the outdoors of Maui.
Even though we brought our own tent for camping, after a day, we found the communal facilities to be very high-end, with amenities in the tent area at a glamping level. The facilities are complete, with luxurious outdoor showers and restrooms where you can watch the stars while showering. Camp Olowalu also provides various outdoor activity equipment, such as kayaks and snorkeling gear. The wind is stronger by the sea, so if you are interested in setting up your own tent, be prepared.
