Hawks Nest State Park | Introduction
Hawks Nest State Park is located in the Appalachian region of West Virginia, near the famous New River Gorge. In recent years, it has become one of the state's most iconic parks. The area's history is closely tied to coal mining and railway transportation, leaving behind remnants of old mines and railway tracks. The park’s landscape features steep valleys and winding rivers, surrounded by dense forests that transform with the seasons.
During autumn, the mountains are covered in a stunning mix of red and yellow foliage, making it one of the best places in the eastern U.S. for fall colors. In summer, the park is a hotspot for outdoor activities, offering multiple hiking trails suitable for various fitness levels. Visitors can also take the New River Jet Boat Ride for a closer look at the river and the dramatic canyon landscape. Whether you're into hiking, rafting, or simply soaking in the beauty of nature, this park is a fantastic destination.
Hawks Nest State Park also serves as a great base for exploring New River Gorge National Park. Since the two parks are close to each other, visitors can stay at Hawks Nest State Park for a night or two, enjoying the breathtaking views from Hawk’s Nest Overlook, strolling along the scenic trails, and then taking time to visit New River Gorge National Park.

Hawks Nest State Park | Lodging & Dining
On-Site Lodging | The Lodge at Hawk's Nest
The most popular accommodation option is The Lodge at Hawk’s Nest, a state-operated lodge with an unbeatable location. The rooms offer stunning views of the canyon and lush mountains. Waking up to misty mountain scenery in the morning and watching the sunset in the evening is truly mesmerizing. I stayed here for two nights and found it very comfortable. While the rooms are not overly luxurious, they are clean, the beds are firm yet cozy, and the nights are incredibly peaceful.

The lodge’s restaurant also features great views, attracting even non-hotel guests who come just for the scenery. The menu focuses on classic American comfort food, including steak, hearty soups, fried chicken, and burgers. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. Sitting by the window while enjoying a meal with a view of the canyon is incredibly relaxing. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys sipping coffee while watching the morning mist, this is the perfect spot for you.

Hawks Nest State Park | Must-See Attraction
Lover's Leap Overlook
Lover’s Leap Overlook is located just a few minutes' walk from The Lodge at Hawk’s Nest. The name comes from a legendary tale about two young lovers from rival tribes who, unable to be together, chose to leap off the cliff hand in hand as a symbol of their unwavering love. This tragic yet romantic story adds a special meaning to the overlook.
To reach the viewpoint, visitors must descend about 100 stone steps, making the trail slightly challenging. While there might be a tram available to make the descent easier, hiking remains the best way to experience the dramatic elevation changes and immerse yourself in nature.
The trail is short but scenic, surrounded by lush greenery in the summer and vibrant autumn foliage in the fall. Upon reaching Lover’s Leap Overlook, you are greeted with a panoramic view of the New River Gorge. The winding river cuts through the mountains, stretching into the distance. On clear days, you can see the train tracks below and even catch a glimpse of rafters navigating the rapids, adding a dynamic contrast to the serene landscape.

Hawks Nest Overlook
Hawks Nest Overlook is a must-visit viewpoint and the highlight of the park. Perched on a cliffside, it offers an incredible vantage point of the winding New River Gorge, framed by rolling mountains. The best times to visit are early morning and sunset when the lighting is at its most dramatic. During fall, when the valley is covered in vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, even a simple phone camera can capture breathtaking photos—some say it’s even more picturesque than New River Gorge National Park!
This overlook is also home to birds of prey, and if you're lucky, you might spot eagles soaring through the canyon. When a train passes through the gorge, its sound echoes across the valley, creating a spectacular scene.

Nearby, the Hawks Nest Tunnel was built in the 1930s to redirect water from the New River to a power plant. Today, it stands as a historic landmark, offering a glimpse into the region’s industrial past. Right across from the overlook is the park’s visitor center, which provides extensive information about the park and surrounding attractions. There is also a large picnic area, perfect for a relaxing break.
