Babcock State Park | Introduction
Babcock State Park is located in West Virginia, USA, and features the beautiful rural landscapes of the state. The park was developed in 1933 during President Roosevelt's New Deal initiative by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC constructed the Glade Creek Dam, campgrounds, administration building, and numerous trails within Babcock State Park.
The park's most famous landmark, the Glade Creek Grist Mill, is a reconstructed watermill that symbolizes West Virginia’s rural heritage. Babcock State Park is only about a 30-minute drive from New River Gorge National Park, making it a great stop along the way for visitors heading to the national park.
The best time to visit is in the fall (late September to mid-October). During this season, the watermill is surrounded by vibrant maple leaves, reflecting beautifully on the creek. The entire park is painted in shades of red and golden hues, making it the perfect time for leaf-peeping and photography.

Glade Creek Grist Mill
The Glade Creek Grist Mill is the most iconic landmark within the park. Built in 1976, it was assembled using parts from several old mills, replicating the design of 19th-century watermills in the region. The creek and waterfalls beside the mill enhance the scenery, making it a favorite photography spot—whether in the early morning mist or under the golden afternoon sunlight. The most picturesque season is fall when the red and yellow maple leaves frame the mill and stream, creating a stunning, postcard-worthy landscape.
This mill is not only charming in appearance but also faithfully preserves the traditional structure and working mechanisms of a historic watermill. Inside, visitors can see millstones, gears, and a belt-driven system that demonstrate how corn and wheat were ground into flour in the past. Guests can step inside the mill to observe these mechanisms in action and gain insight into how agricultural communities once relied on water-powered equipment for food production.
